The American Wine School, founded in 2002 by Cleveland wine maven Marianne Frantz, offers classes for wine lovers and restaurant and hotel professionals. Classes cover wine regions, tasting profiles, and food and wine pairings. The school also hosts periodic trips to wine regions in Italy, California, and France -- complete with one-of-a-kind dinners and tours.

Classes for Amateur Wine Lovers:

The American Wine School offers a variety of classes, both as individual sessions and as series. Topics include "Wine Tasting 101," "Varietals I, II, and III," and "Basic Food and Wine Parings". Classes feature a multi-media presentation followed by tutored tastings. Guest lecturers -- area chefs, sommeliers, and wine experts -- are also featured. Tuition includes a customized text, tasting sheets, and "tasty homework."

Classes are held at the in Beachwood at the school's classrooms.

Classes for Wine Professionals:

In addition to classes for the casual wine lover, the American Wine School offers professional certification courses for those working in the hospitality, sales, and restaurant industries. These classes delve more deeply into flavor profiles, wine making techniques, and wine varietals. These 6-week courses are offered in accordance with the WSET in London and graduates receive a Level 2 intermediate certificate or a Level 3 advanced certificate (depending on the class).

Wine Tours:

In addition to wine classes, the Cleveland Wine School hosts special trips to wine-growing regions. These one-of-a-kind tours include private wine dinners, tours of wineries not generally open to the public, and special events such as a demonstration on oak barrel construction on the Napa trip. Future plans include a trip to Bordeaux.

About Founder Marianne Frantz:

Marianne Frantz, the Cleveland Wine School's founder, CEO, and principal instructor, is one busy lady. In addition to her duties at the school, she writes a regular column for Cleveland Magazine. A former high school chemistry teacher, Ms. Frantz became interested in wines and wine travel while working for American Express' platinum divison in New York City. She is a certified wine instructor and is a candidate for the WSET Diploma in London.

Other Wine School Events:

You may have seen the American Wine School at the Fabulous Food Show recently. They hosted the wine and spirit tasting event. The school also hosts the Epicurean Event Series with the Ritz Carlton hotel, downtown. This series combines guest chefs, winemakers, and wine experts from around the country with an elegant five-course meal -- paired with the correct wines, of course.
