Lake Erie Wines are noted for their lush, fruit flavor profiles. The region's icewines are particularly note-worthy. Among the many wine growers in Ohio's Lake and Ashtabula Counties, east of Cleveland, is Chalet Debonne, Ohio's largest estate-bottled winery.
Chalet Debonne is a family-run business, run by Tony Debevc and his family. In fact, the Debevc's have been growing wine grapes in this region since 1916. The current winery was built in 1971.
Chalet Debonne wines have been recognized in wine competitions from San Francisco to New York, from Toronto to Dallas.
Chalet Debonne crafts a wide variety of wines, the most noted of which is their Lake Erie Icewine, made from Vidal Blanc grapes that are allowed to freeze on the vine. Other Chalet Debonne wines include Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Lake Erie Riesling, Razzbery Riesling, Vidal Blanc, Pinot Noir/Syrah, Chambourcin, Cabernet France, and Merlot. The winery also makes several unique wines from native North American grapes, including Pink Catawba and Delaware.
Currently, Chalet Debonne ships only within Ohio. To order online, see their Web site.
