Guide Review - Heck's Cafe - Ohio City

Heck’s Café in the middle of Ohio City is housed in a charming, restored 19th century brick townhouse. Its’ a friendly place, popular with neighborhood residents as well as out-of-towners and suburbanites. The no-frills menu includes delicious burgers, such as the au poivre burger and the Rogue burger, made with chunky bleu cheese dressing. Burgers are accompanied by a generous serving of hand-cut fries, easily the best fries in the city. The menu is rounded out with heaping salads of organic greens, fresh pastas, and grilled items. Heck’s serves a varied selection of beers and wines to accompany the meal. Heck’s is a popular spot for Sunday brunch, when the entrees include an indulgent and tasty eggs benedict, stuffed French toast, and a Brie and mushroom omelet.

Heck’s Café is divided into a pub-like, wood-paneled smoking section and a light and airy non-smoking atrium in the rear of the building. A vintage New Orleans iron spiral staircase to nowhere serves are the room’s focal point and provides a resting place for lush ferns and flowering plants. Photographs by local artists decorate the atrium’s walls. In the warmer months, Heck’s provides al fresco dining along the side of the building.

Heck's, in business since the early 70s, has recently changed ownership. Although I've continued to have excellent meals here, several friends have reported inconsistent food and service as have a number of online reviews.(last updated 4-26-08)
