Bay Village is a quiet, lakeside community, located about 15 miles west of downtown Cleveland. The town boast five miles of Lake Erie shoreline as well as a lively cultural community and several notable past and present residents, including actress Patricia Heaton and Yankees owner, George Steinbrenner.

History:

Bay Village started as a Western Reserve development called Dover Township. One of the first settlers was James Calhoon, a Scotsman from the east. He brought his wife and eight children to the territory in 1810. The brick house he built for his family in 1818 still stands and is now the Rose Hill Museum.

Other familiar family names soon followed--the Bassets, Crockers, Halls, Wolfs, and Windsors, just to name a few.
In the early 20th century, the construction of the electric railway between Cleveland and Toledo made Dover Township a popular summer retreat for wealthy Clevelanders. Among these new residents was John Huntington, a Standard Oil executive. His former property is now the Huntington Reserve of the Cleveland Metroparks.

Bay Village was incorporated in 1950 and took the name Bay Village.

Demographics:

According to the 2010 census, Bay Village has 15,561 residents, 89% of whom are white. In addition, 66% of Bay Village residents are married. The median age is 41 and the median household income is $70,397.

Notable Residents:

Famous Bay Village restaurants--past and present--include journalists, Dick Feagler and Michael Heaton; actress Patricia Heaton; Radio personality, John Lanigan; former Cleveland Safety Director, Eliot Ness; Dr. Sam Sheppard; musician, Kate Voegele; Yankees owner, George Steinbrenner; and Browns punter, Dave Zastudil.

Parks:

Bay Village has 138 acres of park land with facilities that include playgrounds, an outdoor swimming pool, a 1/2 mile exercise trail that overlooks Lake Erie, baseball fields, a sledding hill, and two skating ponds.

The city is also home to the Huntington Reservation of the Cleveland Metroparks (pictured above), which includes a beach, excellent fishing, the Lake Erie Nature and Science Center, Huntington Playhouse, and BAYarts.

Schools:

Bay Village schools rank among the top four percent of Ohio schools. The district serves approximately 2500 students and facilities include two elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school.

Arts and Theater:

Bay Village is home to the Huntington Playhouse, a summer theater housed in the former barn of the Huntington estate in the Cleveland Metroparks.

The park is also home to BAYarts, a unique craft store and art gallery that offers also offers classes.

Hotels near Bay Village:

Although Bay Village does not have any hotels, the city is just a mile away from several hotels in Westlake, located just to the south, and to Cleveland airport hotels, located about seven miles away.
