Northeast Ohio Water Parks

Water parks are great for cooling off in the summer and indoor parks are an ideal getaway from the snow and cold of a Northeast Ohio winter. Cleveland, and the surrounding area, has a number of fun resorts and other water parks. Below are our favorites.

1. Kalahari Ohio - Sandusky

This African-themed indoor/outdoor water park, located in Sandusky Ohio, welcomes day and overnight guests. The indoor park, currently at 80,000 acres will open an additional 93,000 acres on December 21, 2007, making it the largest indoor water park in the United States.

Features of the indoor park include a wave pool, the Behemoth Bowl, a basketball pool, a FlowRider surfing simulator, and a children's play area, just to name a few.

Kalahari is also a full, family-oriented resort, with facilities that include a spa, a miniature golf course, an arcade, a pottery-making studio, several restaurants, and 596 African-themed guest rooms and suites.

2. Great Wolf Lodge - Sandusky

Great Wolf Lodge, in Sandusky, is one of a chain of family resorts. Located just off of the Ohio Turnpike, the Great Wolf Lodge was the first Ohio indoor water park and is still one of the best. The highlight of the resort is the 33,000-square foot indoor water park that features an interactive water fort with 12 levels, a zero-depth Cub Paw pool, and lots of slides, swings, and other fun water toys.

Other facilities at the resort include a variety of family-friendly rooms, include the kids cabin suites and family suites with fireplaces; two restaurants; a fitness center; a huge arcade; and the Cub Club children's activity center.

3. Castaway Bay - Sandusky

Cedar Point's year-round, Caribbean-themed, indoor water park resort is located just off of the entrance to the Cedar Point Causeway in Sandusky, Ohio. The 38,000-acre indoor water park features a water roller coaster, a wave pool, indoor and outdoor whirlpools, and numerous water slides, among other things.

The resort features 237 guest rooms, three restaurants, and a huge arcade.

The water park is available to resort guests every day of the week. In addition, a limited number of day passes are available Monday through Thursday.

4. Wildwater Kingdom - Aurora

Geauga Lake Park may have closed its gates permanently, but the adjacent outdoor water park, Wildwater Kingdom, continues to delight guests.

Features include a 30,000-square foot wave pool, include "Splash Landing," a four-story, 3-level play structure with 70 different water gadgets and "Thunder Falls," Ohio's tallest waterslide complex.

5. Pioneer Waterland - Chardon

Pioneer Waterland is a fun-filled outdoor water park, located east of Cleveland in Chardon, Ohio. The water park includes a 3-acre activity pool, twin Bonzai speed slides, spiraling waterslides, and a "Black Hole" enclosed slide.

The park also features non-water activities, including mini-golf, an arcade, and basketball courts.

6. Monsoon Lagoon - Port Clinton

Located near the Lake Erie Islands, this outdoor water park features the three-story Typhoon Rush Slide Tower, a 600-foot tube slide, a 17-level kids treehouse, and an adult pool with a swim-up bar. Non-water attractions include go-karts, mini-golf, and a huge arcade.

7. Soak City - Sandusky

Soak City, located adjacent to Cedar Point Amusement Park in Sandusky, is an 18-acre outdoor water park that combines a stretch of white sand Lake Erie beach with a fun-filled man-made water park. Features include a 500,000 gallon wave pool, two relaxing inner tube river rides, and a host of slides and other water apparatus. The park is open from early May to early September.

8. Maui Sands - Sandusky

The Maui Sands Resort, in Sandusky, opened in May of 2008. The resort features a 55,000-square foot indoor waterpark that connects to three resort hotels. The 306 guest accommodations include the Maui Sands Family Suites a four-story, all-suite hotel; the Maui Sands Village Hotel, with boutique-style rooms and suites in a Hawaiian Village setting; and the Holiday Inn Express, whose 40 rooms have received a "Maui makeover."

The waterpark features North America's first deep-water wave generator, a giant bowl-shaped tube slide, two body slides, a treehouse, an activity pool, and two heated spas--one outdoor and one indoor.
