Winter Olympians from Northeast Ohio - 2014

One doesn't necessarily think of Cleveland and Northeast Ohio when someone mentions winter sports. However, the area has an excellent ice skating program (former Olympic champion, Carol Heiss Jenkins coaches at Lakewood's Winterhurst Rink), many ski areas and a history of high school and collegiate hockey. So it's not surprising that the Cleveland area is sending several athletes to compete in the 2014 Winter Games, which will be held February 7-23, 2014 in Sochi, Russia.

Since we saw Tianna Madison in London, she got married, took up bobsledding and qualified for the WINTER Olympics. The 36-year-old track and field star (and winner of a Gold medal in the 2012 4x100m relay) is a native of Elyria and joins track and field team mate Lolo Jones in Sochi to compete in the bobsled event.

Twenty-six year old, Brianne McLaughlin is a native of Sheffield Village, Ohio (west of Cleveland) and a graduate of Elyria Catholic High School. She was the goaltender for the 2010 Silver-medal-winning US women's Olympic Hockey Team and is returning in that position for the 2014 games.

McLaughlin attended Robert Morris University where she played four years of hockey. In college, she set an NCAA record with 3809 career saves. This is McLaughlin's second Olympic games.

Another member of the US Women's Hockey Team, 26-year-old Kelli Stack hails from Brooklyn Heights (just south of Cleveland). Stack, who plays forward, is a two-time member of the US National Women's Hockey team, a team that won gold in 2008-2009. Stack attends Boston College where she is ranked seventh in the NCAA in hockey. She was also a member of the Silver-medal-winning 2010 Olympic team. Stack now plays for the Boston Blades CWFL hockey team.

Stack has amassed numerous honors, including being named Hockey East's Player and Rookie of the Year and receiving the Archie Griffin Sportsmanship Award and the Ohio High School Athletic Association Scholar Athlete Award in high school.
