Winter Olympians from Northeast Ohio - 2010

By , About.com Guide

One doesn't necessarily think of Northeast Ohio when someone mentions winter sports. However, the area has an excellent ice skating program (former Olympic champion, Carol Heiss Jenkins coaches at Lakewood's Winterhurst Rink), many ski areas and a history of high school and collegiate hockey. So it's not surprising that Northeast Ohio is sending two athletes to compete in the 2010 Winter Games.

Twenty-two year old, Brianne McLaughlin is a native of Sheffield Village, Ohio (west of Cleveland) and a graduate of Elyria Catholic High School. She is a goaltender for the 2010 US women's Olympic Hockey Team.

McLaughlin attended Robert Morris University where she played four years of hockey. In college, she set an NCAA record with 3809 career saves. This is McLaughlin's first Olympic games.

Kelli Stack

Another member of the US Women's Hockey Team, 22-year-old Kelli Stack hails from Brooklyn Heights (just south of Cleveland). Stack, who plays forward, is a two-time member of the US National Women's Hockey team, a team that won gold in 2008-2009. Stack attends Boston College where she is ranked seventh in the NCAA in hockey.

Stack has amassed numerous honors, including being named Hockey East's Player and Rookie of the Year and recieving the Archie Griffin Sportsmanship Award and the Ohio High School Athletic Association Scholar Athlete Award in high school.
