Parma Ohio

Parma Ohio, the largest of Cleveland's suburbs, is home to over 80,000 residents. The city, founded in 1816, sits south of Cleveland, surrounding by Seven Hills, Independence, Broadview Heights, North Royalton, Parma Heights, and Brookpark.

History:

The first European settlers in Parma were Benaiah Fay and his family. The Fays were from New York State and named the city after Parma, New York (which is named for Parma, Italy). The town of Parma Heights was spun-off in 1912 and Parma was incorporated as a village in 1924.

The period just after WWII brought growth to Parma, with the population increasing from around 20,000 in 1950 to around 110,000 in 1980. Many of these new residents came from Cleveland's Polish and Eastern European neighborhoods.

Demographics:

According to the 2000 census, Parma has 85, 655 residents, 95.67% of whom are white. In addition, approximately half (52.7%) of Parma residents are married. The median age is 39 and the median household income is $43,920.

Education:

The Parma City School District has an enrollment of approximately 13,000 students from Parma, Seven Hills, and Parma Heights. The school district includes 15 elementary schools, three middle schools, and three high schools.

In addition, several of the area's Catholic schools are located in Parma, including Holy Family, St. Bridget, Padua, and St. Francis de Salle.

Shopping:

Shopping Parma includes Parmatown Mall on Ridgewood Drive as well as shopping districts around the mall, on Snow Road, and along State Road.

Famous Residents:

Among the famous Parma residents, past and present, are restauranteur Hector Boiardi, actor Ted Levine, astronaut James A. Lowell, and Oldsmobile founder Ransom E. Olds.

Parma, Ohio is just a short distance from the numerous Cleveland airport hotels as well as the hotels located at the I-77/Rockside Road interchange in Independence.
