Berea, located in the southeast corner of Cuyahoga County, is a town of approximately 19,000 residents. Founded in 1836, it was named for the Biblical town of Beroea. Today, Berea is home to the Cleveland Browns training facility and the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds.

History:

Berea was founded in 1836 by New Englander, John Baldwin. Baldwin would go on to found the Baldwin Institute (later, Baldwin-Wallace College) and to capitalize on the sandstone, found along the Rocky River in Berea.

Baldwin invented the grindstone, used until the 1940s to sharpen knives and farm implements. Berea became known as the "Grindstone Capital of the World."

Demographics:

ccording to the 2000 U.S. Census report, Berea has 18,970 residents. Approximately 91.48% are white and slightly less than half (48.1%) are married. The median age is 36 years and the median household income is $45,699.

Education:

The Berea School Distrcit, which includes Middleburg Heights, Brook Park and a portion of Olmsted Falls, was ranked as one of the 20 best systems in Cuyahoga County, according to a recent local magazine survey. The district incorporates 12 schools, 450 Teachers, and 7700 Students. Two parochial schools augment the system. Berea City Schools also has one of the largest community education and preschool programs in the state.

Berea is also home to Baldwin-Wallace College, a liberal arts school with 4500 students, founded in 1848.

Parks:

The Cleveland Metroparks snake through Berea and tie it to the other parks of the Emerald Necklace. In addition, the Berea Rec Center on Front Street offers swimming, exercise programs, and a variety of other sports and activities for residents.

Events:

Berea hosts a number of popular events each year. Among these are the Cuyahoga County Fair, the Berea Rib Cook-off in May, and the Cleveland Irish Festival. Berea is also home to the Cleveland Browns training camp, held each July and August.

Berea has five primary shopping areas: Berea Commons and Downtown Triangle, River Park Center, West Valley Plaza, Berea Plaza, and the North End. Berea enjoys two major supermarkets, three drug stores, four car dealerships, and almost 500 other businesses.
