As we wait for all of the sale ads to come it, take a look at a few suggestions for successful Black Friday shopping from Donna Montaldo, the About.com Guide to Couponing. She advises:
- Do your research in advance. Sounds obvious, but many a holiday shopping trip has been derailed by impulse shopping or by losing out on a deal because you didn't know where to look for it in the store. I do a reconnaissance trip in advance of Black Friday and always take a copy of the ad with me to the store.
- Compare prices. Make sure that the store "deal" is really a deal by comparing prices online before you go to the store. Sometimes, you can get a similar deal online without having to fight the crowds.
- Know store policies. Researching individual store return policies can help you decide where to purchase an item between two stores with similar pricing. Some stores have a very narrow window for holiday returns. Others even charge a restocking fee.
