The Garden Gate Get-a-Way Bed and Breakfast is a five-room, garden-themed inn, located in the heart of Northeast Ohio's Amish Country. The inn, named one of the top ten bed and breakfasts in the United States, is noted for its homemade breakfasts. One fall breakfast highlight is the inn's fresh apple coffeecake.

Prep Time: 20 minutes

Cook Time: 40 minutes

Total Time: 1 hour

Yield: one cake

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 ½ tsp. baking powder
  • ¾ cup melted butter
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 2 apples
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 1 ½ tsp. cinnamon

Preparation:

Preheat oven to 375 degrees and spray an 11"x9" baking dish with Pam. Beat sugar and eggs in a mixing bowl. In a separate bowl, toss flour and baking powder. To sugar and egg mixture, add milk, 1/3 flour, and melted butter. Mix well. Add another 1/3 of the flour and mix. Add milk, vanilla, and the remaining flour and mix until batter is smooth. Fold in one apple that has been peeled and chopped into small pieces. Pour into prepared pan. Mix sugar and cinnamon and pour over cake batter. Core and cut the second apple into 1” wedges and place on top of cake. Bake 35-40 minutes until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool 10 minutes and serve.
