Northeast Ohio Foods

A number of foods and food products originated in Northeast Ohio, like Stadium Mustard and Stouffer's Dinners. Others have become so ingrained into the fabric of the city as to be native, like paczki, those Polish doughnuts that proliferate just before Lent. Maple Sugaring in Northeast Ohio
Ohio is the fourth largest of the 12 states that produce maple sugar. More than 900 families produce nearly 100,000 gallons of syrup each year, but the demand far exceeds the supply. In addition, the state hosts a variety of maple sugar events around the sugaring season, which lasts from early February to mid-March.
Northeast Ohio's Honey Industry
Ohioans have been raising bees and collecting nector to make honey since the mid-1800s. Today, the industry is a thriving collection of farms, which produce a wide range of honey products, from raw comb honey to processed honey to beeswax candles.
Ohio Apples
Ohio apple growers produce up to 100 million pounds of apples each season. In Northeast Ohio, the stores, farmers' markets, and apple farms are loaded with bags and bushels of a wide variety of apples, from September through November. Ohio produces around 40 different varieties, some Ohio originals. Here's a look at 11 of the most popular kinds of Ohio apples.
Ohio Icewine
Icewine, that delicate, sweet elixir, crafted from wine grapes that are allowed to freeze on the vine, originated in Germany in the late 18th century. Today, however, the world's best icewines come from the wine regions surrounding the Great Lakes, including Ohio's Lake Erie wine appelation.
Maple Syrup in Northeast Ohio
March is Maple Syrup season in Northeast Ohio. Produced much the same way today as it was when the Western Reserve was "settled" in the late 18th century, maple syrup is collected by drilling a small hole into the trunk of the maple tree and then collected the sap in a tin bucket, hung on the tree.

What are Paczki?
Paczki, pronounced POONCH-key, are Polish jelly-filled doughnuts, traditionally served just prior to Lent. In Northeast Ohio, these delicious confections can be found in the bakeries of Slavic Village and other Eastern European food stores in the weeks leading up to Lent each spring.
Fish of Lake Erie
Lake Erie, the shallowest lake of the five Great Lakes, is home to an abundant supply of fish. All year, there is some species to be found in this body of water that forms most of Ohio's northern boundary. Learn a little about eight of the most prevalent Lake Erie fish.
