Cleveland Neighborhoods - Ohio City

Ohio City is one of Cleveland's oldest neighborhoods. Founded in 1818, it is bounded by Lake Erie, W. 25th St. to the east, and Lorain Ave. to the south.

The area, once an independent city and fierce competitor of Cleveland's, was annexed by the larger city in 1854. Today, the area is filled with historic homes, new construction, trendy restaurants, and eclectic shops and art galleries.

Demographics:
Ohio City today is home to approximately 10,000 residents. They are a diverse mixture, representing 15 ethnic groups.

Dining:
Ohio City is known for its diverse and tasty restaurants. Among the best are:
  • The Flying Fig - One of the best and most fun restaurants in town, this Market Avenue eatery serves innovative, contemporary cuisine at fair prices.
  • Momocho - on Fulton Avenue serves tasty Mexican cuisine served well into the night. Charming patio behind the restaurant.
  • Great Lakes Brewery - A Cleveland landmark, it's more than a brewery. Try the burgers or the sausage sampler here...and, of course, the beer.
  • Heck's Cafe - A casual and popular eatery know for its burgers and hand-cut fries.
  • Johnny Mango - On the corner of Fulton and Bridge, this funky and fun diner serves Caribbean and Mexican cuisine with many vegetarian offerings.

    Shopping
    Stores are unique, funky, and eclectic in Ohio City. Among the must-sees are:
  • The Westside Market - The most spectacular food market in the city, this emporium houses independent vendors selling meat, produce, dairy products, flowers, and more.
  • The Funky Buddha - Indonesian furniture, artwork, jewelry, and more. Fascinating.
  • The Glass Bubble Project - A glass-blowing studio and workshop, this interesting storefront also sells glass items and gives tours of the facility.

    Parks:
    There are dozens of small green spaces throughout Ohio City. Among the larger parks are:
  • Fairview Park - On Franklin, between W 32nd and W 38th Sts.
  • Jim Mahon Park - Located on Detroit, between W 30th and W 32nd Sts, this park is known for its spectacular Lake Erie sunsets.
  • Monroe Cemetery - Not technically a park, this green space between W 30th and W 33rd Sts. is filled with flowering trees and beautiful vistas.

    Each June, Ohio City celebrates its beautifully restored homes and gardens with the annual Home and Garden Tour. Lolly the Trolley is on hand to take visitors from one site to the next. Later in the summer, the area honors its Latin roots with the annual Puerto Rican festival, a weekend of fabulous food, music, and dance.
