Ted Strickland, a five-term US Democratic congressman from Ohio's 6th district and a former minister, prison psychologist, and professor, became Ohio's 68th governor on January 8, 2007. Find out more about the man that heads Ohio's government.
Early Years:
Ted Strickland was born in Lucasville Ohio, just outside of Mansfield, in 1941. He was one of nine children born to working class parents.
Education:
Strickland received a BA in history from Asbury College in Kentucky, followed by a Masters of Divinity degree from Asbury's Theological Seminary. He also holds a doctorate in psychology from the University of Kentucky.
More than a Politician:
In addition to serving for five terms in the US Congress, Ted Strickland has been a minister, a prison psychologist at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility, and a college psychology professor.
Strickland in Congress:
Ted Strickland was first elected to Congress in 1992. He lost the 1994 election, but was returned to Congress in 1996 and has served Ohio's 6th district there ever since. Congressman Strickland has served on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, the Congressional Steel Caucus, and the House Veteran's Affairs Committee.
On the War in Iraq:
While in Congress, Governor Strickland voted in 2002 against authorizing military force in Iraq. As a member of the House Veteran's Affairs Committee, he supports insuring the rights of those in Iraq, especially the over 50 percent of Ohio's National Guard Troops, serving there.
On Health Care:
Governor Strickland has stated that healthcare will be a priority of his administration. To that end, he will create the Ohio Healthcare exchange, an initiative of private and public funding to aid Ohio's uninsured. He also proposes the reach out to uninsured families in Ohio who are eligible, but not receiving government assistance and to launch "Healthy Ohio," a program to advocate screening and early detection of medical conditions in Ohio's at-risk population.
On Education:
Governor Strickland plans to work towards insuring a safe and secure learning environment for all Ohio students. In addition, he plans to increase the enrollment in Ohio colleges and universities by 230,000 in the next ten years. He also plans to create the "Ohio Knowledge Bank," a fund into which every Ohio high school graduate will get money to assist in funding his/her college education.
Family:
Governor Strickland has been married to Frances Strickland, whom he met at the University of Kentucky, for 18 years. Mrs. Strickland is an educational psychologist and author.
