History:
Holden Arboretum was founded in 1931, after a bequest from Cleveland mining engineer and executive, Albert Fairchild Holden. His daughters took up the project as did many of his former neighbors, including Mr. and Mrs. Warren H. Corning, and donated time, money, and land to the project. The thriving arboretum, today, is dedicated to education and conservation of plant life, particularly those plants native to Ohio.The Gardens at Holden Arboretum:
Holden Arboretum has a wonderful collection of specialty gardens, including the colorful Rhododendron Garden (pictured at right), the Ohio wildflower garden, and a butterfly garden. The complex also boasts a crabapple tree collection, several ponds, and miles of hiking trails, suitable for all skill levels.Visting Holden Arboretum:
Holden Arboretum offers ample free parking. Maps and visitor information are available at the visitor's center. A variety of guided tours of the Arboretum are offered. In addition, there is an Arboretum tram the tours the facility. The tram is $2 per person and runs throughout the day from May to October. Holden Arboretum is noted for its fine museum store, which is stocked with books, educational toys, and other gift items.The Warren H. Corning Library:
Holden Arboretum houses the extensive Warren H. Corning Library, founded with the private horticulture and botany library of Mr. Corning. Visitors are welcome to use the print and video materials for research, but print material are not circulated. The library is open Tuesday through Friday from 10am - 5pm. The rare book room is available by appointment only.Hosting Your Event at Holden:
The Arboretum has several pavilions and outdoor spaces available for private parties and functions, which can accommodate from 45 to 250 guests. Holden Arboretum is open daily from 9am until 5pm, everyday except for Christmas and Thanksgiving.Admission is $6 for adults, $5 for seniors, $3 for children ages 6-12, and free for children 5 and under. Senior citizens (60+) are admitted free on Tuesdays.
