Cedar Point, the second oldest amusement park in the country, sits at the end of a slender strip of land, at the edge of Lake Erie. Located about an hour and a half's drive from downtown Cleveland, the park boasts the largest number of roller coasters in the world, ranging from the venerable, wooden "Blue Streak" to the 420 foot tall "Top Thrill Dragster."

History:

The 364-acre Cedar Point owes its existence to the point's white sand beach, still one of Lake Erie's few sandy beaches. As early as 1870, a bathhouse and ferry terminal were constructed at the end of the point. Later, around the turn of the (20th) century, a Sandusky developer landscaped the area, added the first amusement park, and built the 600-room Hotel Breakers, complete with tin ceilings, Tiffany chandeliers, and a gracious, domed lobby.

The Park Today:

Cedar Point today is a fun place to visit for the entire family. It has beautifully landscaped gardens, lake views, a museum, an ice-skating show, plenty of shops and food outlets as well as water rides, four children's areas, a classic merry-go-round, and, of course, the roller coasters.

The Rides:

Cedar Point is home to 17 roller coasters, more than any other amusement park in the world. There is the venerable, wooden "Blue Streak," the topsy-turvy "Corkscrew," the "Magnum" and the "Magnum XL," and the 420-foot tall "Top Thrill Dragster." New in 2007 was the "Maverick," a 4450-foot coaster that combines a 95 degree drop, twisted turns, tunnels, and more.Cedar Point is more than just roller roasters, however. The park features other thrilling rides, such as the "Demon Drop," children's rides, a giant ferris wheel, a classic merry-go-round, a paddlewheel excursion, and the Cedar Point icon "Space Spiral," a 330-foot tall rotating observation deck that offers spectacular views of the park and Lake Erie beyond.

Visiting Cedar Point:

Cedar Point is open between early May and Labor Day. After Labor Day, the park is open Friday evenings, Saturdays, and Sundays through the end of October.

Admission is $42.95 for adults and $15.95 for those under 48" tall and seniors over 62. Children 2 and under enter free (2008 pricing). Discounts are offered for active and retired military personnel as well as groups of 15 or more. Season and multi-day passes are also available.

Staying at Cedar Point:

Cedar Point operates two hotel plus an RV park on the point as well as two hotels on the mainland, Castaway Bay Indoor Waterpark and Breakers Express. The Hotel Breakers is a venerable restored hotel that harkens back to Cedar Point's gracious early days. The Sandcastles Suites offers larger mini-suite accommodations, ideal for families, and the Camper Village welcomes RVs only. For a list of the top hotels in the area, click here.
