John Carroll University is a private, co-educational, Catholic and Jesuit college, located in University Heights, Ohio -- just east of Cleveland. Founded in 1886, the school is consistently ranked by US News and World Report as one of the top ten Midwest regional universities.
John Carroll University was founded in 1886 on Cleveland's near west side as St. Ignatius College. (The accompanying secondary school still thrives in the original Ohio City location.) The Jesuit college changed its name in 1923 to honor the first United State Archbishop and founder of Georgetown University.
The University moved to its current, suburban location in 1935. (University Heights, originally called Idlewood, changed its name during the school's construction. Originally an all-male college, John Carroll admitted its first female student in 1968.
John Carroll University campus spans 60 acres and consists of 26 buildings, including the new "state-of-the-art" Dolan Science Center. The most recognizable structure is the Graselli Tower, one of the original university buildings.
Courses and Colleges:
John Carroll University offers undergraduate degrees in 30 fields and graduate degrees in selected areas. The University is made up of three colleges: the College of Arts and Sciences, the Boler School of Business, and the graduate school.
John Carroll current enrollment is approximately 3400 undergraduate students and 800 graduate students. About 65 percent of the student body is from Ohio. The remainder represent 38 states. Most of student body resides on campus. JCU students have use of the University's fitness center and swimming pool and the university has free wireless Internet access.
Notable John Carroll alumni include Bob Dickenson, the president and CEO of Carnival Cruise Lines; Tim Russert, NCB News Washington Bureau Chief and moderator of Meet the Press; Anthony Pilla, S.J., Bishop, Diocese of Cleveland; Brigadier General Carter Ham, Commanding Officer in Mosul, Iraq; and Tim Donahue, the CEO of Nextel.

John Carroll is located about 20 minutes east of downtown Cleveland in the suburb of University Heights. The school is easily reached from I-271. John Carroll University welcomes prospective students (and their parents) to visit the campus. Tours are given several times daily Monday-Friday and once on Saturday between July and April.
