Dr. Eugene Sanders: Dr. Eugene Sanders joined the Cleveland Metropolitan School District beginning with the 2006/2007 school year as CEO. Prior to coming to Cleveland, Dr. Sanders headed the Toledo (Ohio) school district, where he took that district's graduation rate from 55 to 80 percent.

Alternative Schools in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District: In addition to the standard ciricula, Cleveland schools offer a variety of learning options. Among these are the arts-based education at Cleveland School of the Arts at University Circle; SuccessTech in downtown Cleveland, where students are paired with a local entrepreneur; South High's Washington Park Horticultural Learning Center; and the Health Careers Center at Promise Academy on E. 30th St.
The Dress Code: The Cleveland Metropolitan School District maintains a strict districtwide student uniform and dress code policy. Designed to remove a barrier to student learning, the policy bans hooded clothing, sagging pants, jeans, long white t-shirts, slogans on shirts, and headgear. Families with incomes falling within 200% of the federal poverty level guidelines are eligible for a clothing voucher program.
Security: Security remains a priority for the Cleveland Metropolitan School District. Dr. Sanders, the district's SEO, announced the following security improvements at an October 12 (2007) news conference:
- Hiring and training additional security personnel
- Locking all school doors, except for one secure entrance per school
- Making securing funds for metal detectors at each school a priority.
- Setting up an anonymous hotline for students to report potentially dangerous situations (216 771-SAFE).
Cleveland School Meal Program: CMSD schools provide a nutritious breakfast and lunch daily for students at no cost.
What's New at Cleveland Schools: New for the 2007/2008 school year is a mandatory dress code, the establishment of the Ginn Academy for at-risk boys, and four single-gender academies.
