Clevelander Troy Smith is thought by many to be the finest college quarterback of the 2006 season. In his senior year with Ohio State, Smith led the "Buckeyes" to an undefeated season, losing only in the BCS Championship bowl. He is 2006 winner of the Heisman Trophy.
Early Years:
Troy Smith, born July 20, 1984, grew up in Cleveland, the son of Tracy Smith and Kenneth Delaney. He has one sister and three brothers.
High School:
Troy Smith attended St. Edwards in Lakewood for his sophomore and junior years, but transferred to Cleveland Glenville Hight School as a senior. He played football at both schools, throwing for 969 yards and 12 TDs at Glenville and leading that school to the state playoffs. Smith also played basketball all three years and was a member of the track team.
Ohio State Career: Troy Smith was recruited in 2003 by Ohio State out of high school and he accepted over his second choice West Virginia University. As a freshman, Smith played a few games as a running back and a kick returner. He entered his sophomore year as back-up quarterback to Justin Zwick. When Zwick was injured midway through the season, Smith started, winning four of five games, including the match against Michigan.

  • Rushing: - 283 rushes; 1297 yards; 4.2 yards per carry; 14 TDs
  • Total Offense: - 44 games; 939 plays; 6882 yards; 7.33 yards per play; 68 TDs
Smith has yet to make a regular season appearance for the Baltimore Ravens.
Troy Trivia:
  • Troy Smith has an older brother, Rod, who played guard at Ohio State in the early 1990s. He has another brother, Andre, who played football at Bowling Green.
  • Smith is ambidextrous and throws both right and left-handed.
  • Smith was coached at Glenville H S by Ted Ginn, Sr., the father of his Glenville and OSU teammate, Ted Ginn Jr.
  • Smith graduated in Spring of 2006 with a B A in Communications.
Heisman Winner: Troy Smith was awarded the 71th annual Heisman Trophy in 2006. He received 86.7 percent of the vote, the 2nd highest percentage in the history of the award. His award is the 7th to be awarded to OSU players.
Troy Smith in the NFL: Smith was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the 5th round of the 2007 NFL Draft. He is currently listed as their third string quarterback.

Smith played in four games during the 2007 season. He handled the ball 88 times and gained 506 yards, including three touchdowns.
