The Cleveland Plain Dealer is Ohio's largest newspaper and the only daily newspaper in Cleveland. It is one of the top twenty newspapers in the country (in terms of circulation). Founded in 1842, the Plain Dealer continues to be awarded for its journalism, most recently winning a Pulitzer Prize for Connie Schultz's twice-weekly column.
History: The Cleveland Plain Dealer was founded in 1842, just 50 years after Moses Cleaveland set foot on Cleveland shores. In 1967, the paper was acquired by Newhouse Newpapers, a division of Advanced Publications, who still own the paper. After the demise of Cleveland's morning paper, the Cleveland Press, in 1982, the Cleveland Plain Dealer became the sole daily newspaper in the area.
The "Plain Dealer" Today: Today, the Plain Dealer employs over 1500 people as well as 1400 independent paper distributors. In addition to the paper's headquarters building on Superior Avenue across from the Tower Press building, the Plain Dealer has a large, modern production facility on Tiedeman Road in Brooklyn, Ohio.
Sections of the Paper: The Plain Dealer daily paper includes the front News section, the Metro section, Sports, Arts and Life, Business, and Classified. In addition, special sections include Business Mondays, Taste (on Wednesdays), Inside and Out (on Thursdays), Friday! Magazine, and Real Estate (on Saturdays). Sunday sections include PDQ, Sunday Arts, Homes, and Driving.
Circulation: The Cleveland Plain Dealer lists their circulation as 778,000 daily and 1.1 million on Sundays. A full 62.6% percent of adults in the greater Cleveland area read the daily paper and 75.4% read the Sunday edition. This gives the Plain Dealer the second largest coverage of any paper in the country (On Sundays, it has the highest coverage.)
Subscribing to the "Plain Dealer": The Plain Dealer is available via daily delivery to residents of Cuyahoga, Lake, Geauga, Lorain, Portage, Erie, Ottawa, Summit, Ashtabula, and Medina Counties. Subscription rates within that area are 40 cents daily and $1.50 for Sunday. A variety of special packages are available. Mail delivery, at a higher rate, is available to points all over the world.
Editorial Excellence: Cleveland Plain Dealer staff and management have recently been recognized for excellence. Columnist (and wife of Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown), Connie Schultz won the Pulitzer Prize for commentary in 2005 and former editor, Doug Clifton was named "2003 Editor of the Year" by Editor and Publisher Magazine.
