The Allen Memorial Art Museum was founded in 1917 as part of Oberlin College. The main Tuscan Renaissance-style building was designed by Cass Gilbert. The 1977 addition was designed by Venturi, Scott, Brown and Associates. The museum was named for its founder, Dr. Dudley Peter Allen, a graduate and trustee of Oberlin College.
The museum's permanent collection contains more than 11,000 objects, covering virtually every culture and medium. The Allen is particularly well-known for its 17th century Dutch and Flemish Art, 19th and 20th century European and contemporary American art, and its American, Asia, and European works on paper.
The Allen Museum hosts a continual stream of special exhibits, including items from the nearby Cleveland Museum of Art as well as from museums around the world.
