Artistic Luxury: Faberge, Tiffany, Lalique
Not since the 1900 World's Fair in Paris have the works of Carl Faberge, Louis Comfort Tiffany, and Rene Lalique been displayed together. With their exhibit, "Artistic Luxury: Faberge, Tiffany, Lalique," the Cleveland Museum of Art reunites these Gilded Age masters, with more than 300 objects of jewelry and luxury goods from museums and private collections from around the globe.

The Cleveland Museum of Art partially reopens June 29 after being closed for more than two years. Nineteen new, light-filled galleries are open, filled with 900 art objects. The Cleveland Museum of Art continues to acquire diverse and interesting pieces from around the world to add to their permanent collection. These are just a few of their most recent additions:
Vatican Splendors from Saint Peters Basilica and the Vatican Museums
Vatican Splendors, one of the most comprehensive Vatican collections to ever tour North America, shares 200 art objects and relics spanning more than 2000 years. The exhibit, which will be at Cleveland's Western Reserve Historical Society, from May 31 to September 7 (2008), includes works by Michelangelo, Bernini, and Giotto, among others.

The Cleveland Museum of Art, during its $258 million renovation, is hosting an exhibit of 200 pieces of arms and armor, from the Renaissance era of the Austrian Hapsburgs. Glass Pavilion, Toledo Museum of Art
Toledo Museum of Art's Glass Pavilion opened in August of 2006. All of the modern structure's exterior walls are made of glass and most of the interior ones are as well. The Pavilion houses the museum's diverse art glass collection as well as studios, a glass-blowing workshop, and a theater.

From Monet to Picasso: Masterpieces from The Cleveland Museum of Art
The Cleveland Museum of Art, currently undergoing a $258 million renovation, is sharing 60 pieces from their collection with museums throughout the world. Among these 47 paintings and 13 sculptures are works by Monet, Rodin, Cezanne, and van Gogh. The exhibition will travel to Bejing, Seoul, Tokyo, and five North American venues before returning being shown in Cleveland from October 21, 2007 to January 6, 2008.

Butler Institute of American Art
The Butler Institute of American Art, located in Youngstown Ohio, was the first museum in the world to focus exclusively on American Art. Founded in 1919, the museum features a diverse collection of work, including Winslow Homer's "Crack the Whip."
Curating under Construction
The Cleveland Museum of Art continues its $258 million expansion project, set to be completed in 2010. While the museum is under construction, Cleveland Museum of Art has stored its permanent collection, but is hosting a series of temporary exhibits, including the current "Barclona and Modernity." I recently spoke with CMA's William Robinson and Jeffrey Strean about the challenges of curating under construction.

Cowan Pottery: Northeast Ohio's Contribution to Art Deco
Once found in high-end department stores all over America, Cowan Pottery is just beginning to be rediscovered by 20th century pottery collectors. The Art Deco style pottery was produced in Lakewood and Rocky River, near Cleveland Ohio, from 1912 to 1931. During that short period, the Cowan Pottery developed an excellent reputation for craftsmanship and design, and launched the careers of many renowned American artists.
Sparx in the City - Ohio's Largest Art Walk
Sparx in the City, held each September, is Ohio's largest art walk. It highlights the work of hundreds of Northeast Ohio artists with open galleries, live music, and all genres of art.

Allen Memorial Art Museum - Oberlin College
The Allen Memorial Art Museum, at Oberlin College, was founded in 1917. The museum collection, which consists of over 11,000 objects, is considered to be one of the finest college or university collections in the United States. The Allen Museum is just a 45-minute drive from downtown Cleveland and admission is free.
Toledo Museum of Art
The Toledo Museum of Art, founded in 1901, is just two hours down the Ohio Turnpike from Cleveland. The museum houses a diverse collection of art with special emphasis on 19th and 20th century European and American paintings and 20th century glass art. The museum of free and makes a nice day-trip from Northeast Ohio.

Cleveland Public Art - Unexpected Art in the City
Cleveland Public Art, a non-profit organization established in 1984 as the Committee for Public Art and based out of historic Ohio City, generates civic projects that reflect Cleveland’s cultural and artistic landscape.
Free Stamp
One of the most controversial -- and I think, interesting -- pieces of public art in Cleveland is "Free Stamp" by Danish artists Claes Oldenburg and Coosje Van Bruggen.
Viktor Schreckengost
Viktor Schreckengost, born in Sebring Ohio near Alliance, is a legendary designer and artist. His work has encompassed designing pottery for Rocky River based Cowan Pottery, teaching at Cleveland Institute of Art, and designing such diverse products as children's toys, dinnerware, lawn furniture, and a radar recognition system used during World War II.
