Portage Lakes State Park Waterways:
The majority of Portage Lakes State Park consists of water. There are 2,520 acres of water for swimming, fishing, and boating. The lakes were naturally formed by glacier activity and many have been transformed into wetlands and bog areas.Enjoy the lakes on boats with up to 400 horsepower, or cruise along on a pontoon, sailboat, or canoe. Boats are available for rent and there are eight ramps available for public use.
Turkeyfoot Lake offers a sandy beach and smooth waters for swimming. Fishing is a popular sport throughout the park. Good catches include walleye, pickerel, large mouth bass, pike, musky, and catfish. During winter months, you can enjoy ice boating, ice skating, and ice fishing.
Wildlife:
The wetlands and bog areas are home to many animals including deer, raccoon, skunk, mallards, wood ducks, heron, hawks, owls, beavers, and red foxes. Hunting is available with proper license during hunting seasons.Camping at Portage Lakes State Park:
Choose from over 70 campsites within the park. Campsites include pit latrines and dump stations. Facilities include are fire pits, picnic tables, and restrooms. For recreation, enjoy the basketball court, horseshoe pits, sporting equipment, and a volleyball court. There are many small restaurants along the lakes, some with docks for boaters. Nearby, Green, Ohio also offers many popular restaurants and shopping.Trails:
Wind through the woodlands and along the marshes on five miles of marked hiking trails. There are marked areas of nature preserves with protected vegetation throughout the park. Stop for a picnic lunch at one of the five strategically-located picnic areas or at one of the two shelter houses.
