Silver Lake Village began as an amusement park in 1874. The area consisted of a lake and 35 acres of land and was a successful, large amusement park with 10,000 guests a day until the railroads stopped their excursion service to the park in 1912. The 600-acre Silver Lake Park was sold in 1917 to become residential land. In 1918, the Village of Silver Lake was incorporated. Today, Silver Lake Village consists of Silver Lake, Crystal Lake, and 1.5 square miles of land.
According to the 2000 census, Silver Lake Village has 3019 residents, 98% of whom are white, .1% African-American, and .1% Asian. In addition, 74% of Silver Lake Village residents are married. The median age is 45 and the median household income is $70,875.
Many residents will travel to Stow or Cuyahoga Falls for dining; there are a limited number of dining establishments in Silver Lake Village, including Rockne Becker Restaurant.

The Silver Lake Village students enjoy the benefits of the Cuyahoga Falls School District, which has a current enrollment of 7855 students. The Ohio Department of Education has given the district its highest rating of Excellent. The Village of Silver Lake students have one elementary school, one middle school, and one high school within the Cuyahoga Falls City School District facilities.
Silver Lake Park is reserved for residents of Silver Lake Estates, which accounts for 460 homes within the Silver Lake Village. It offers residents swimming, canoeing, kayaking, rowing, fishing, sailing, windsurfing, volleyball, ice skating, ice hockey, hiking, and cross country skiing.
Crystal Lake is open to all residents of Silver Lake Village. It is a 40-acre lake that offers recreational activities including swimming, diving, slides in the water, boating, volleyball, tennis, sand beach, and fishing. Membership is required. In addition, the Summit Metroparks hike and bike trail runs through Silver Lake Village, offering residents safe, maintained trails. The village also has a 1.4 mile circular trail that runs along the river.
Silver Lake features several annual events. In the summer, residents enjoy ice cream socials, "Hot Dog Saturdays," races around the lake for charity events, and garden tours of village homes. For the holidays, the Christmas Tree Lighting, an evening of festivities at the Christmas Tree Island and Silver Lake Boathouse, is a popular event for Silver Lake Village residents with Christmas caroling, cookies, and hot chocolate.
