The Akron Art Museum, founded in 1922, is located in the heart of downtown Akron. A $34 million renovation project, opened in July of 2007, combines the original 1899 Renaissance revival structure with a modern "gravity defying" glass building.
History:
Founded in 1922, the Akron Art Museum was a pioneer in acquiring early 20th century art.
The Collection:
The Akron Art Museum's permanent collection includes more than 3000 objects, with a heavy concentration on early 20th century American art and Ohio artists.
The New Museum:
The new Akron Art Museum, designed by Coop Himmelb(l)au, features over 13,000 square feet of gallery space (triple the former space) and over 7,000 square feet of space for traveling exhibits. The new structure, which is attached to the original 1899 Renaissance Revival building, features a glass cloud canopy and "gravity defying" walls. Among the new art is an original wall mural by Sol LeWitt.

The new structure also houses a library, a children's gallery, and an auditorium.
Hours and Admission:
The Akron Museum of Art is open on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 11am to 5pm and on Thursday from 11am to 9pm. Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for seniors and students. Children 12 and under and museum members are admitted free of charge.
Hotels near the Akron Art Museum:
