The Bridges of Ashtabula County

By July 31, 2013

Follow me on:

Ashtabula County, an hour's drive east of downtown Cleveland, has 18 excellent examples of original, restored, and replica 19th century covered bridges, in a variety of constructions -- the most of any county in Ohio. They also include the longest and the shortest covered bridges in the United States.

One of these is the Creek Road Bridge (pictured at left). The covered bridge construction styles, popular in 18th century New England, were brought to Ohio by the early (Connecticut) settlers of the Western Reserve. All can be viewed by driving along the county's charming country roads.

For a sample of these beautiful bridges, join me for a virtual tour of ten of the best examples of these unique structures.
