The first Moondog Coronation Ball, held on March 21, 1952, was America's first rock concert. The event, conceived and promoted by Cleveland DJ Alan Freed, was a bit of a disaster, with more than 20,000 fans trying to squeeze into a 10,000-seat venue. In fact, the event was canceled after just the first song.
Today, however, the Moondog has been revived and rock and roll fans celebrate music and this little part of Cleveland history each March at a concert, sponsored by WMJI. This year the event is on March 30 at Quicken Loans Arena and will feature Doobie Brothers, Three Dog Night, The Temptations Revue, and the Spencer Davis Group. Tickets go on sale today.
