Cleveland (hearts) Books

Wednesday December 31, 2008
From Guest Blogger, Amelia Zatik Sawyer of "Chef's Widow:"

I am a fan of books. Always have been. I remember being 12 years old and after my dad turned out the lights for bedtime, I would sneak a flashlight on and read The Babysitter’s Club under my covers. Every night this tradition repeated itself and sometimes I even find myself now (almost 30) in search of a flashlight. The obsession began.

After seeing The Jane Austen Book Club, a film that was a bit tiresome but still inspiring, I decided I would start my very own book club. The Kurt Vonnegut Book Club was born.

The Kurt Vonnegut Book Club
I took to my blog, Chef’s Widow and asked my reader’s if there was any interest. To my surprise, I received countless emails from people in search of a book club. I organized the concept based on my love of Kurt Vonnegut. I had been an avid fan since my father introduced me to Slaughterhouse Five. I tirelessly read all of his books that I could find in high school. While contemplating my book club idea and realizing that being a mother to two kids under kids will limit my reading time, I decided I would base a book club on the author. The first meeting was three months ago.

We meet at a restaurant, eat food, and talk Vonnegut and whatever else pops up. The group changes and our structure is super laid back. A good time is had by all and I think we all feel a teensy bit smarter for meeting. The meetings are held on the first Sunday of the month at 2pm. The current book assigned is Cat’s Cradle. For more information please visit the Kurt Vonnegut Book Club Page.

Cleveland Book Clubs
In my research for my own book club I found the following book clubs all located in Northeast Ohio:

Between The Page
Between The Page is a newer book club in Northeast Ohio. Their first meeting is going to be held tentatively at La Chateau in Strongsville in January. The first book assigned is Water For Elephants by Sara Gruen.

Boys & Bedlam Book Club
The Boys & Bedlam Book Club is a book club for boys ages 8-13. Their meetings are in downtown Cleveland at the Public Library in the Memorial-Nottingham room. The next meeting is on January 29th, 2009 from 4-5pm. The book currently assigned is Elijah of Buxton by Christopher Paul Curtis. For more information please visit the Cleveland Public Library’s website.

Ne{o}Lit Book Club
Ne{o}Lit Book Club is a monthly book club held at different locations in Cleveland. The next meeting is on January 8th, 2009 at 7pm at Market Avenue Wine Bar. The current selection is Watchmen by Alan Moore & David Gibbons.

Editor's note: Of course, all of the books mentioned above may be found at Cleveland's many independent bookstores.

I may attend the Between the pages meeting. Water for Elephants is one of my all time favorite books. Thanks for sharing, I have been thinking about going to a BC for awhile now.
