The Goodyear Blimp

Sunday July 13, 2008
I live just south of downtown Cleveland and I frequently see the Goodyear Blimp sailing over my backyard on its way from Akron to Progressive Field or Cleveland Browns Stadium. Its distinctive sound and graceful shape always make me look up at the sky and smile.

Akron's Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company has a long history of making blimps. Their first was built in 1925. Past Blimps have been used as navy transport ships and in the 1930s and 1940s as military survelliance vessels that patrolled the east coast.

Today, the company's fleet of three U.S.-based blimps mainly provide dramatic views at sporting events and ferry Goodyear corporate guests. Still, the Goodyear Blimp remains a unique symbol of Northeast Ohio.
