I live in Akron, and there are indeed plenty of good things to see and do for free. In summer, there are dozens of free concerts in the Metro parks as well as other sites around town. All kinds of music for every taste. In December, there is the annual Tuba Christmas concert at the beautiful Civic Theater, also free.
If you go right outside of Akron, to Barberton, you will find Lake Anna right in the center of this lovely little town. There is something going on almost every weekend there, such as Cherry Blossom Festival in the Spring, Arts and Crafts fest, 4th of July and Labor Day celebrations, Chickenfest, and the Mumfest in the Fall. There are also free concerts several evenings a week at the gazebo at the Lake. Also lots of variety, from Akron Symphony, rock, pop, country, Glen Miller Orchestra, and even an Elvis impersonator.
