Hanna Theater in Downtown ClevelandThe historic Hanna Theater, built in 1921 and located at Cleveland's Playhouse Square, is undergoing a $20 million face-lift. The 500-seat theater (down from its current 1400 seats) make-over is being spear-heading by the Westlake architectural firm of Reed Leskosky, whose other work includes renovations to St. Stanislaus Church, the Idea Center at Playhouse Square, and Beachwood's Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage.

The Hanna is the fifth--and last--of Playhouse Square's vintage theaters to be restored. The project completes a 27-year-old plan that saved the Ohio, Palace, State, and Allen Theaters from the wrecking ball.

The "new" Hanna will be the new home for the Great Lakes Theater Festival, the Cleveland-based theater company that produces a five Shakespearean and modern plays each season. The theater construction is expected to be completed in September for the beginning of the company's 2008/2009 season.
