Cleveland Museum of Art: Curating under Construction
Thursday December 21, 2006
The Cleveland Museum of Art continues its $258 million expansion project, set to be completed in 2010. The project will increase the museum's space to 588,000-square feet and include a sun-lit 34,000-square foot central piazza and a life-long learning center as well as more gallery space. During the construction, the museum is hosting a series of temporary exhibits, including the current Barcelona and Modernity, which runs through January 7, 2007. I recently spoke to CMA's curator of Western European Art and project director for "Barcelona," William Robinson and the museum's Director of Design and Architecture, Jeffrey Strean, about the challenges of hosting such an exhibit while embarked on a massive construction project. You can read my entire interview here.
If you haven't already seen Barcelona and Modernity (or even if you have), make sure to get to the museum before it closes on January 7. The diverse collection of art -- some from well-known artists, others from lesser known, but exciting artists -- is well worth the visit. You can read a review of the exhibit here and see a preview of some of the exhibit's features here.
