Lake Erie is Shrinking
Wednesday August 30, 2006
According to the latest Lake Erie Management Plan, Lake Erie is shrinking. In fact, the document, prepared annually by a joint committee of the US EPA, Environment Canada, and the various state and local governments of communities that abut the lake, estimates that Lake Erie will lose 15% of its surface area by 2050. The lake has warmed one degree since 1988 and if that trend continues, they estimate that the lake will drop approximately 34 inches and lose approximately 2200 square miles of surface area. No proposal for countering this trend was offered in the report.
